Do you offer free shipping?
Yes, we do! With the exception of our trial size, we offer free standard shipping for all U.S. orders. It's automatically applied at checkout.
When will my order ship?
We process and ship most orders in one to two business days, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Once your order has shipped, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking number. Please note that it may take up to 48-72 hours for your tracking information to update on the carrier's tracking website. Most packages take 4-7 days from the ship date to arrive.
Which shipping carrier do you use?
We ship USPS First-Class. This allows us to get your ModernKind products to your mailbox with even less emissions than shopping at a brick-and-mortar store.
Do you offer rushed shipping?
No, we do not offer rushed/overnight shipping because of its increased carbon emissions compared to standard shipping.
Where do you ship to?
At this time, we are only able to ship to addresses in the United States. This includes Alaska and Hawaii, but the shipping may take a little longer to get to you. We plan to allow international shipping in the future.
What payment methods can I use?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Meta Pay.
How does your 30-day return policy work?
We hope you love your ModernKind products. If you’re not happy with your purchase, please email support@trymodernkind.com within 30 days of your purchase with your name and order number. This is our 30-Day Kind Guarantee.
Since ModernKind products are made in small batches with natural ingredients and minimal packaging, we are only able to accept new products and cannot accept used or empty products. You will be responsible for the cost of returning your ModernKind product to us, and your returned items must be shipped within 10 business days of return authorization approval. You can use whatever method of shipping is most economic — just send us the tracking information so we know when to expect it.
We will not provide a refund for returned products that are damaged due to misuse, mishandling, abuse, accidents, or improper handling. Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. The credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment within 5-7 business days.

Why shampoo powder?
Because packaging and shipping water is entirely unnecessary. Up to 90% of traditional shampoo is simply water. By removing the water and only shipping active ingredients in smaller, lighter packaging, we’re cutting carbon emissions by 90% 🤯 Now that is simply amazing!
How do I use ModernKind Shampoo?
It’s not too different from regular shampoo! Here’s how to use our powder-to-lather shampoo:
1️⃣ With thoroughly wet hands and hair, sprinkle small amount onto palm.
2️⃣ Rub hands together to make a paste.
3️⃣ Massage onto scalp to magically lather.
✅ Use conditioner/style as usual.
What ingredients are in ModernKind shampoo?
We use mild coconut-based surfactants to cleanse your scalp and hair without stripping its natural oils. Oatmeal protein conditions hair and encourages healthy hair growth. Aloe vera and sorbitol moisturize the hair to lock in hydration and promote healthy hair. Finally, we add Vitamin B5 to promote happy, healthy hair growth.

What does ModernKind Shampoo smell like?
Made of a blend of lavender, bergamot, eucalyptus, and sweet orange essential oils, our dreamy Botanical Lavender scent is calming, slightly sweet and a tiny bit earthy. It's not overpowering. You'll fall in love with this aroma.

Which hair types are ModernKind Shampoo good for?
ModernKind Shampoo is for most hair types, including straight, wavy, curly, and coiled. It’s color-safe and chemical-safe. If you’re following the Curly Girl Method, our ingredients pass the Curlsbot test.
Is it a dry shampoo?
No, it’s not a dry shampoo. ModernKind Shampoo is a water-activated shampoo powder that is designed to be used in the shower like traditional shampoo.
Can I pre-mix water with ModernKind Shampoo?
No, please keep water out of the container. Our powder is designed with conscious, people-friendly ingredients that are designed to be activated with water right before use. Keeping the water away until you’re ready to use it lets us use natural ingredients without needing a harsh preservative. Pre-mixing it with water in a container could invite nasties like bacteria, mold, and yeast to grow
Where is ModernKind Shampoo made?
We make it ourselves in Elk River, Minnesota.
Is ModernKind Shampoo travel- and TSA-friendly?
Yep, we’re super travel-friendly. In the United States, the TSA allows you to bring an unlimited amount of powder in a checked bag and 12 oz. of powder in a carry-on bag.
Since our containers are far under the TSA threshold, we’re way easier to travel with compared with traditional shampoos. Plus, you won't have to worry about any spills in your bag 😉
How do I refill my bottle?
We’ll send you home-compostable refill packs. Just clip the corner to fit into the bottle and tap up and down. Tip it back once in awhile for any clumps. Some prefer to use or make a funnel.

How is ModernKind sustainable?
Every aspect of ModernKind is intentionally designed to be as sustainable as possible.
Our waterless formula is designed to be refilled and made with conscious ingredients that are better for people and the planet since they’re naturally-derived, plant-based, vegan, and cruelty-free. Our concentrated powder formula takes up less space and is lighter to ship, so it has a lighter carbon footprint than traditional shampoo.
We don’t use plastic containers or use single-use plastics in our packaging, helping to eliminate the 550 million plastic shampoo bottles that are thrown in the landfill every year.
Our packaging materials are selected to be curbside recyclable and/or home compostable, favoring materials that have a low carbon footprint and are most widely accepted to be recycled and reused.
We believe you deserve luxurious, salon-quality haircare products that are better for your hair and the planet.
Is your packaging recyclable or compostable? What is it made of?
We don’t use any plastic in our packaging or shipping. Instead, we use a curbside-recyclable cardboard box and insert that are FSC-certified, printed with non-toxic ink, and doesn’t have wasteful inserts.
Our shampoo is shipped in an infinitely-recyclable aluminum bottle. It's also designed to be refilled, meaning it'll be the last shampoo bottle you'll ever need. Aluminum is the most-likely material to be recycled by municipal utilities in the U.S.
Our refill bags are home-compostable (OK Home Compost Certified - no industrial composter needed!) — just throw them in your composting pile, your worm farm, or bury them in your garden.

How do I compost my refill pack?
Our shampoo refill packs can be composted in your backyard. Put your refill pack in your home compost or worm farm that has access to heat, water, oxygen, soil, and micro-organisms. The bags usually break down into small fragments in as little as 4 months, but it may take longer depending on your compost environment, temperature, and humidity.
If you don't have a home compost, you can bury it right in your garden. It will take longer to break down than an ideal composting environment.
If you don't have a home compost, you can dispose of it at a local industrial composter if you have access to one.
How do I responsibly dispose of my packaging?
We select earth-friendly materials in all of your packaging so that nothing ends up in your trash. Here's how to dispose of each piece properly:
Cardboard box: curbside recyclable, including the cardboard insert, paper tape and shipping label.
Aluminum bottle: if you're no longer going to use ModernKind, the bottle and cap are curbside recyclable. Leave the label on (it's recyclable, too).
Refill Pack: add it to your home compost or worm farm. Or deliver it to your local industrial composter. Or bury it in your backyard or garden (this takes longer to degrade than a home compost, though).

How do ModernKind's subscriptions work?
Automating sustainable habits is the best way to make them stick. Every action you take matters, so we built our subscription to make the low-waste choice the easier choice.
Our subscription is super simple. Just order ModernKind Shampoo powder, and in your first order you'll receive 4 months of shampoo in a refillable aluminum bottle and one refill pack. In 4 months, you'll be charged the same price to receive 4 months of fresh shampoo powder in two home-compostable refill packs.
Shipping is free, and you can cancel or edit your subscription at any time.
What if I don't want to commit to a subscription?
Totally get that. You can cancel your subscription before your next charge date at any time for free. If that's still not for you, our Shampoo Powder Trial Sizes are individually priced at $11 each.
How do I access my subscription account?

What changes can I make to my subscription?
You can change things like how often you receive your subscription, view upcoming orders, update your shipping address and payment method, and pause, cancel, or reactivate your subscription.
